France v England Match Preview

10th June 2012By: Mark Tinklin

Group D: Monday 11th June 17:00

England's campaign begins against dark horses France

France

Doubts remain over the French rearguard, but Laurent Blanc will probably keep faith with under fire defender Philippe Mexes, despite widespread criticism of his form. The France manager has said he won't be making many changes to the side that beat Estonia last week. That means Florent Malouda brings experience further forward and Alou Diarra will continue to deputise for the injured Yann M'Vila.

England

James Milner and Stewart Downing are expected to get nod out wide for England to contain the free-flowing French attack. The two willing wingers will be asked to protect their full-backs and get forward on the counter attack. There have been doubts over the fitness of John Terry and Ashley Cole, but both will start, alongside Joleon Lescott, who takes over from Gary Cahill. With Wayne Rooney suspended, Danny Welbeck is the favourite to start up front after scoring the winner against Belgium.

As a containing unit England are as good as anyone in the competition. It's going forward that they are lacking. Take Young out of the midfield and England are very poor to say the least.
