Euro racism concerns grow, Cole in mystery absence and Hughton takes over at Norwich

As Euro 2012 gets under way later, further fears over racism at the tournament have been voiced after Mark van Bommel revealed that some of his Dutch players were subjected to monkey chants during training.

The Guardian reports that 25,000 people watched the Oranje warm up and train at the Stadion Miejski last night, where England will host an open training session today.

A significant portion of the crowd was heard to jeer and make racist noises in the direction of players such as Nigel de Jong and Gregory van der Wiel.

The Three Lions, meanwhile, have new injury concerns after it emerged that Ashley Cole may be fighting for fitness.

According to Sky Sports, the left-back missed a civic reception on Thursday, prompting speculation that he was nursing a stomach bug.

This morning’s training session will give more insight into whether the Chelsea man will be fit for Monday’s opener against France.

Elsewhere, Norwich City have named Chris Hughton as their new manager following the departure of Paul Lambert for Aston Villa.

Hughton joins the Canaries from Birmingham City, who he took to the Championship play-off semi-finals last season.

The BBC reports that he is eager to hold on to many of the players that made Norwich’s season such a success last year, including Grant Holt.

The striker put in a transfer request before Lambert left, revealing his unhappiness at not being offered a new three-year-deal at the club.

The 31-year-old scored 49 fantasy football points last season.

Finally, Sky Sports have reported that Liverpool midfielder Maxi Rodriguez has dismissed reports linking him with a move away from the Kop.

After a quiet season and only 14 fantasy football points, Rodriguez was expected to move but the introduction of Brendan Rodgers to Anfield could see him reconsider.
