Assists Explained - Week 15

21st November 2016By: Tom Green

The allocation of assists is often a major talking point and this article gives managers an insight as to certain points were or were not given.

Please note that assists awarded during live updates are provided by a feed – no assists are awarded by the feed for penalties, own goals, rebounds off the woodwork, goalkeeping parries/dropped crosses etc. Also, “double assists” are never awarded by the feed. Goals are subsequently reviewed by the Fantasy League Assist Panel and amended manually after all of the day’s matches have been completed.

Watford 1 Leicester 0
Goal: Etienne Capoue
Assist: Troy Deeney

The Premier League has returned after the international break and it did not disappoint with an action-packed weekend of goals. Champions Leicester suffered their sixth defeat of the season, away at Watford. They found themselves a goal down after just 35 seconds when Roberto Pereyra's cross was headed to Capoue by Deeney, with Capoue subsequently firing home past Kasper Schmeichel. As Deeney's intervention was in the form of a cushioned header as opposed to a flick-on, the assist was solely awarded to Deeney.

Tottenham 0 West Ham 1
Goal: Michail Antonio
Assist: Winston Reid

Saturday’s late kick off saw West Ham travel to White Hart Lane to face a defensively solid Spurs side. But it was West Ham who found themselves a goal up after Cheikhou Kouyate’s header rebounded off the crossbar straight to Reid, whose subsequent volley was headed in by Michail Antonio. Reid's cross to Antonio may have taken a slight deflection en-route to the goalscorer, but the assist was awarded manually to Reid shortly after the game had been completed as it was not initially given by our live scoring feed.

Tottenham 1 West Ham 1
Goal: Harry Winks
Assist: Vincent Janssen

Tottenham levelled soon after the break when Janssen's cross/shot was parried by goalkeeper Darren Randolph to Winks, who scored his first Premier League goal from close range. As the feed does not award assists for goalkeeper parries, this too was added manually.

Tottenham 1 West Ham 2
Goal: Manuel Lanzini
Assist: Winston Reid

It wasn’t too long before West Ham once again took the lead, again indirectly from a corner. As Dimitri Payet’s corner was floated in, Vincent Janssen fouled Winston Reid inside the box and West Ham were awarded a penalty. With Mark Noble not on the pitch, Manuel Lanzini stood up and slotted it past Hugo Lloris. As with all penalties, the assist was manually awarded to Reid as the feed does not initially award the assist.

Tottenham 2 West Ham 2
Goal: Harry Kane
Assists: Heung-Min Son

In typical West Ham fashion, the visitors capitulated under the pressure in the last 10 minutes and gifted Spurs with one of the greatest comeback of the season. Similar to Tottenham's opening goal, Son's cross was pushed out slightly by the goalkeeper straight to Harry Kane who made no mistake in burying it into an open net. Due to the Randolph’s intervention being a goalkeeping parry, Son was therefore deserving of an assist.

Tottenham 3 West Ham 2
Goal: Harry Kane
Assists: Heung-Min Son

West Ham saw themselves lose to Tottenham in the last minute after Havard Nordtveit stupidly left a leg out trying to tackle Son. The Korean went down and Spurs were awarded a penalty, which was neatly tucked away for a second Harry Kane goal in the space of a few minutes. The assist was later added for Son, meaning that every assist in this game had to be manually amended after the game!

Middlesbrough 0 Chelsea 1
Goal: Diego Costa
Assists: No assist

The solitary Sunday fixture saw the current form team, Chelsea, travel to the Riverside to face a Middlesbrough side looking to get further away from the relegation zone. It was Chelsea, however, who scored the only goal of the game and went top of the table. Marcos Alonso headed Eden Hazard's corner off the shoulder of 'Boro defender Calum Chambers. The ball looped up in the opposite direction, with Diego Costa reacting first to score at close range. As a result, no assist was awarded.
