Liverpool reject Newcastle loan bid, Berbatov on way out and Arsenal hope for van Persie U-turn
Newcastle have had a loan bid for former Magpie Andy Carroll rejected by Liverpool.
BBC Football is reporting that Newcastle offered to take the striker on loan for the year with a view to a permanent deal next summer, but the offer is reportedly well below the value Liverpool are looking for.
Carroll does look increasingly likely to leave, however, after new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wrapped up the signing of Italian forward Fabio Borini in the past few days.
Elsewhere, Rio Ferdinand has been forced to defend himself against allegations that he used a racist term in a tweet about Ashley Cole, as the fallout from John Terry’s racism trial continues.
Ferdinand, who scored 29 fantasy football points last season, denied there were any racist connotations attached to the term, saying "it’s a type of slang/term used by many for someone who is being fake."
Ashley Cole’s lawyers have stated they will not look to pursue the matter as he and Ferdinand are "good friends."
Meanwhile, Sky Sports is reporting that Dimitar Berbatov is set to leave Manchester United after revealing his frustration at his ever-diminishing role in the Red Devils’ first team.
Despite scoring an impressive 21 fantasy football points and seven goals in just five games last season, Berbatov believes it is time to "say goodbye" to the Old Trafford team as he lies behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck in Ferguson’s attacking pecking order.
Finally, Robin van Persie could make a sensational U-turn and stay at Arsenal despite stating his intention not to renew his contract, according to the Telegraph.
With just a year to run on his current deal and having claimed he would not sign any extension, it was widely accepted that the Dutchman would leave the Emirates this summer.
However, Arsenal are now said to have renewed hope that their star striker will stay.
