England hopeful bags winner against Wigan

James Milner fired Villa to within three points of fourth placed Tottenham with a fine long-range strike at the DW Stadium.

Villa ran out 2-1 winners to keep themselves right in the hunt for the final Champions League spot.

James McCarthy had comically given Villa the lead when, under no pressure whatsoever, he volleyed John Carew's header across goal into his own net.

Villa led for just two minutes though as Gary Caldwell glanced Charles N'Zogbia's header past Brad Friedel to level the scores.

Milner won it on the hour-mark, capping a fine performance with a 25-yard strike, after a poor defensive clearence, which flew though a host of bodies and nestled in the bottom corner.
