Rooney fires United back to the top

England striker continues his fine scoring streak with a brace to sink Fulham

Wayne Rooney scored twice for Manchester United as they ran out 3-0 winners over Fulham to return to the top of the Premier League.

United struggled to break through in the first half but it only Rooney a few seconds to open the scoring in the second period, side footing Nani's low cross into the net.

Five minutes from time he sealed the win after excellent work from Dimitar Berbatov who beat two men and cut the ball back for Rooney to fire home.

Berbatov completed the scoring with a well earned goal in the final minute, nodding in Ji-Sung Park's cross from close-range.

The win took United back in front of Chelsea, who had temporarily held top spot following a 4-1 over West Ham 24 hours earlier.

Centre-back Alex opened the scoring, nodding in Florent Malouda's cross before Scott Parker received a quick throw-in from Kieron Dyer and spectacularly levelled on the half-volley.

Didier Drogba restored the lead just after the break, nodding in another Malouda cross from close range before Malouda deservedly got on the scoresheet himself, latching onto a defensive clearance and driving home a low shot.

Drogba completed the scoring in the final minute, tapping home after Frank Lampard's shot had been parried.

Arsenal continued their fine form to keep pace with the top two, but needed an injury time winner to beat 10-man Hull.

Andrei Arshavin opened the scoring after receiving a pass from Nicklas Bendtner and battling through two challenges before slotting home.

Jimmy Bullard smashed the home side level from the spot after Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink had been manhandled by Sol Campbell.

Bendtner won it in stoppage time though, slotting home the rebound after Denilson's shot had been parried by Boaz Myhill.

Tottenham held onto fourth spot with a convincing 3-1 win over Blackburn on Saturday lunchtime.

Jermain Defoe opened the scoring, tapping home at the far post after Vedran Corluka had headed a corner in his direction.

The header on goal from Corluka changed the direction of the corner and so no double assist is awarded.

Roman Pavlyuchenko doubled the lead after receiving a pass from Defoe.

He shot from distance and saw his effort squirm under substitute keeper Jason Brown.

Christopher Samba pulled a goal back when he headed in Morten-Gamst Pedersen's corner before Pavlyuchenko sealed the win, tapping home a low cross from Gareth Bale.

Two of their rivals for fourth place were both held to draws, Aston Villa drawing 0-0 at Stoke and Manchester City needed a last-gasp leveller in a 1-1 draw at Sunderland.

Kenwyne Jones nodded the Black Cats in front with a fine header from Steed Malbranque's cross but substitute Adam Jonson scored a sublime goal, after receiving the ball from Gareth Barry's corner, to earn a point.

At the bottom, Wolves grabbed a crucial three points with a 2-1 win over fellow relegation rivals Burnley.

Matt Jarvis opened the scoring, latching onto a poor back-pass and rounding the keeper to tap into an empty net.

Clarke Carlisle doubled Wolves' lead when he diverted Adlene Guedioura's wayward shot into his own net.

Steven Thompson headed in a consolation from Graham Alexander's cross but it was too little too late.

Bolton also moved further away from relegation with a 4-0 thrashing against Wigan.

Johan Elmander fired in the opener after a header from Kevin Davies before Davies doubled the lead from the spot after a foul on Tamir Cohen.

Fabrice Muamba was the unlikely scorer of Bolton's third after being found by Chun-Yong Lee and Matt Taylor added a fourth after more more terrible defending when an attempted clearence went straight into his path.

Finally, Birmingham came from two goals down to daw 2-2 with Everton.

Victor Anichebe fired Everton in front after receiving a pass from Philip Neville before Yakubu headed in Steven Pienaar's chipped cross.

Cameron Jerome got the slightest of touches onto Keith Fahey's shot to divert it past the keeper and pull a goal back before Craig Gardner finished off a route-one move after a pass from Jerome to complete the come-back.
