Vettel wins in Monte Carlo

German extends championship lead in

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel claimed victory at the Monaco Grand Prix for the first time in his career to extend his lead in the Drivers Championship.

However, the German was forced to work hard for the win in an incident-packed race in Monte Carlo.

He eventually held off the challenge from Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button in a frantic final five laps following a restart.

That came as a result of a nasty shunt involving Vitaly Petrov towards the end of the race when he got involved in a mass of back-markers who were battling for position whilst trying to let the leading trio lap them.

The safety car was needed earlier on in the race as well when Felipe Massa crashed when being forced wide by Lewis Hamilton in the tunnel.

Vettel's team-mate, Mark Webber, came home in fourth thanks to a fine manoeuvre on Kamui Kobayashi, who finished firth.

Hamilton was on the wrong end of two stewards enquiries and was handed a 20-second time penalty after the race, but his sixth place finish remained unaffected.

Adrian Sutil, Nick Heidfeld, Rubens Barrichello and Sebastien Buemi completed the points-paying positions, while Webber picked up the two bonus Fantasy League F1 points for setting the fastest lap of the race.
