Liverpool still keen on Dempsey, Southampton capture Clyne, and King forced to retire

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted the club have enquired about Fulham’s goalscoring midfielder Clint Dempsey, according to The Independent.

The American, who scored a massive 65 fantasy football points last season with 17 goals and 7 assists, is valued at around £10m by the West London club.

"Clint is a player we've enquired about, it is as simple as that," Rodgers said.

"He's very talented player but we don't like to talk about other clubs' players."

The Independent also reports that Liverpool are still chasing Swansea midfielder Joe Allen, valued at around £15 million, who registered 20 Fantasy League Classic points during an impressive debut Premier League season.

Premier League new boys Southampton have also clinched the signing of coveted young full-back Nathaniel Clyne.

The Crystal Palace defender was out-of-contract this summer, but the Saints will still have to pay a fee, as Clyne is under the age of 24, and the Eagles offered the 21-year-old improved terms.

If a deal cannot be reached between the clubs, it will go to a tribunal to decide upon the level of compensation.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has vowed to fight for his place at the Sports Direct Arena, the Newcastle Chronicle reports.

The 30-year-old found himself behind Papiss Cissé and Demba Ba in the pecking order last season, as they acquired 29 goals and 99 fantasy football points between them.

"I'm sure Alan Pardrew will try to bring in more players to increase competition for places", explained Ameobi, who hit 16 Fantasy League Classic points himself last term.

He added, “I’ve said to the manager I want to fight for my place again."

On a sadder note, highly-respected Tottenham defender Ledley Kinghas announced his retirement from the game, due to chronic knee problems, The Daily Mail reports.

King, who spent his entire 14-year career with the North London club, and captained the side since 2005, will continue representing his beloved Spurs in an ambassadorial role.
