Chelsea triumph in FA Cup final

Drogba goal sinks Portsmouth in the FA Cup final to secure Chelsea's first ever league and cup double

Didier Drogba scored the only goal as Chelsea won by a goal to nil in an action-packed FA Cup final which saw two penalties missed at Wembley.

Both sides went into the final in a confident mood, Chelsea after their 8-0 mauling of Wigan to clinch the Premier League title last week, and Portsmouth knowing they had nothing to lose following their relegation from the top-flight.

Chelsea hit the woodwork an astonishing five times in the opening 45 minutes, though there was nothing unlucky about Salomon Kalou smashing the ball against the bar from six yards when presented with an open goal.

Despite the dominance from the pre-match favourites the game was 0-0 at the break and Portsmouth could sense another upset.

The chances of that grew even larger 10 minutes into the second half when Juliano Belletti fouled Kevin-Prince Boateng in the area but the German hit a tame effort straight at Petr Cech from the spot.

Three minutes later Chelsea had the lead, and this time it was with the aid of the post.

Drogba hit a sublime free-kick over the wall and in-off the far post past a helpless David James despite him standing on that side of the goal.

Portsmouth never really threatened after that and Chelsea could have increased their lead late-on when Michael Brown brought down Frank Lampard in the box with a tired challenge.

Unfortunately for England fans, with the World Cup just around the corner, Lampard did not even force James into a save as he fired the spot-kick wide of the post.

The win gave Chelsea the first ever league and cup double in their history.
