Welcome to the Chilli Guide - our weekly guide to which players you should be looking to bring into your team and who you should be avoiding.
Who decides on the chillis and snowflakes? you may ask. You do - the guide is based on the number of times a player is transferred in and out, by you the Fantasy League Classic managers.
Each Tuesday during the season, we'll be providing a rundown of the latest players who are a manager's best friend this week, only to be unceremoniously dropped the next.
Hot players:
III - Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur)
Whether Gareth Bale was going to play in defence or midfield was a hotly debated topic at Fantasy League HQ when we were compiling the Player Lists pre-season. Based on him being primarily a left-back and comments from Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, it was decided he would play as a full-back this season, but up to now this has not been the case. As long as the Welsh wonder continues to play as he is he will remain a must-have player in Fantasy League Classic.
II – Ashley Cole (Chelsea)
Chelsea could not have asked for a better start to their defence of their title, with 12 goals scored and none conceding in their opening two games. Their total dominance has meant the likes of Ashley Cole has been given even more freedom than usual to bomb forward at every opportunity. The England man has managed one assist in his opening two games, but it could easily have been more and Chelsea's kind opening run of fixtures is set to continue for a while yet. Cole will be hoping for more points against the likes of Stoke, West Ham and Blackpool in the coming weeks.
I – Andrei Arshavin (Arsenal)
The early season absence of striker Robin van Persie and skipper Cesc Fabregas has meant that Andrei Arshavin has been afforded a little more attacking licence in the Arsenal team. It also saw him promoted to penalty duty for the game against Blackpool and he duly dispatched the spot kick when called upon. The popular Russian has shown glimpses of his talent, but has yet to go on a sustained run of form that can bring in the kind of Fantasy League points-haul his ability suggests. A bright start to this season has got some Classic managers believing that this could be Arshavin's year.
Cold players:
* - Milan Jovanovic (Liverpool)
Liverpool's summer signing from Standard Liege Milan Jovanovic attracted a fair amount of attention in what has so far been a quite summer transfer-wise at Anfield. His one-in-two goal ratio for the Belgian side suggested he could be a good Fantasy League player, especially with Fernando Torres starting the season short of fitness. That never really materialised though as Jovanovic was shifted out to the left of midfield and now Torres is back to full fitness. A striker playing in midfield is not particularly attractive for Fantasy League managers and the Serbian's popularity has been affected as a result.
** - Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City)
Stoke's defensive record, at home at least, coupled with his aerial ability made Ryan Shawcross an attractive pick by Fantasy League Classic managers at the start of the season. Two opening 2-1 defeats in a row have seen many change their minds, but that may be a little premature. Yes, Stoke's next game is away to free-scoring Chelsea, but after that they have two home games in a row. A little patience, and an available slot on the bench for the Chelsea game, could see FL managers reap the rewards next month.
*** - Shay Given (Manchester City)
Shay Given's face, pictured above-right, during Monday night's 3-1 win over Liverpool was not the one of a happy man. The Manchester City stopper has fallen down the pecking order at Eastlands and is considering his future. His talent is wasted warming the bench and although City would love to keep him as a fantastic back-up to the impressive Joe Hart, Given will want to play football. Fantasy League managers who gambled on Given in pre-season are getting rid, but he may be worth holding onto for another week to see if he manages to secure a move to another Premier League club.
