Alonso triumphs at Silverstone

Ferrari take advantage of Red Bull slip up to win British Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso gave Ferrari their first win of the season, as he capitalised on a pit-stop problem for rival Sebastian Vettel to win Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Alonso and World Championship leader Vettel pitted at the same time, but the German had a problem with his rear wheel and Alonso exited the pit-lane in the lead and never looked back.

Vettel came home second with Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber finishing third, after being instructed not to try and overtake Vettel in the final few laps.

Lewis Hamilton held off Felipe Massa in a frantic final-lap struggle, with the pair finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Hamilton had briefly held a podium spot, after overtaking Vettel in the second round of pit-stops, but the German's superior pace saw him regain the place on the track.

Hamilton then had to put his car in fuel saving mode which allowed Massa to close up on him towards the end of the race.

Nico Rosberg finished sixth in his Mercedes, ahead of Sergio Perez and Nick Heidfeld.

Michael Schumacher was ninth and Jaime Alguersuari rounded out the points paying positions.

Jenson Button's dismal record in his home Grand Prix continued because he was forced to retire when his team released him from a pit-stop before all of his wheels were correctly fitted to the car.

Paul di Resta also had a mixed day on his Silverstone Formula One debut, he finished down in 15th place.

Daniel Ricciardo brought his Hispania home in 19th place in his first race in F1.
