Fabregas a doubt for Spain, Ireland consider changes
Spain
A thigh injury may keep Cesc Fabregas out of Spain's game with Ireland on Thursday evening, meaning that Vicente del Bosque could turn to a recognised striker. Whether he opts for misfiring Fernando Torres or Athletic Club front-man Fernando Llorente remains to be seen. Fabregas scored the equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Italy at the weekend, and will be disappointed to miss out, but Spain won't want to risk him in a game they will be confident of winning fairly easily.
Republic of Ireland
Giovanni Trapattoni must decide whether to stick with his preferred 4-4-2 formation, or whether to go for a more defensive minded 4-5-1. Ireland need to win the game, but know they could be torn apart if they go for broke too early. Skipper Robbie Keane is almost certain to play, but struggles to operate as a loan striker, which will come into Trapattoni's thinking. Jonathan Walters impressed coming from the bench against Italy and may be handed a start here, either alongside Keane, or up front on his own with Keane dropping to a wide midfield role. There could also be changes in the middle of midfield, but Richard Dunne will play at the back despite missing training with blisters.
Clean Sheet potential:
Spain have kept three clean sheets in their last five games.
Transfer Target:
Manchester City man David Silva has the ability to unlock any defence.
Last meeting:
Spain 1-1 Republic of Ireland (2002)
