Latics stopper offers value for money

Very few Fantasy League managers were brave enough to select a Wigan defender for their team, but those who took a punt on Emmerson Boyce must be feeling very smug.

The versatile defender has scored a very respectable 19 points this season, which is more than enough for a player costing just £3.1m in Classic, who was probably available for free in countless Professional Leagues across the country.

Only 16 full-backs have scored more fantasy football points than the 32-year-old and, while he's level with Newcastle's ever present right-back Danny Simpson, he leaves Rafael, Angel Rangel and Kieran Gibbs trailing in his wake.

Pundits and journalists have been hailing the managerial prowess of Roberto Martinez after he led his team to unforeseen survival.

However, it's the players that made his unconventional 3-4-3 tactic work and few have flourished more in the system than Boyce.

Capable of playing anywhere across the back-line, Boyce is an ideal candidate to play in a back three because of his experience of playing at full-back and centre-back.

Boyce has also made an impact going forward this season, adding three assists to his goal against Fulham.

The Barbados international started his professional career at Luton Town before winning Player of the Year at Crystal Palace in his first Premier League season, way back in 2004.

Wigan have kept clean sheets in their last two games - the wins over Newcastle and Blackburn - and have won six of their last eight outings.

Relegated Wolves stand in their way at the DW Stadium on Sunday and Boyce will be targeting the club's ninth clean sheet of the season.
