Wigan go for Gomez

Martinez reunited with Spanish star from Swansea days

New Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has made his first acquisition since making the step up to the Premier League.

The Spaniard has signed a player he knows well in the form of Jordi Gomez who spent last season on loan with Martinez at Swansea.

The Barcelona-born midfielder arrives from Spanish club Espanyol for around £1.7 million and his form in the Championship with Swansea last season suggests that could be a bargain.

The 24-year-old central midfielder is a set-piece specialist and managed 12 goals in 38 games last season, as well as weighing in with nine assists.

His efforts would have netted him 54 Fantasy League points and anyone taking a punt on him this season will be thrilled with anything close to that.
