Ferrari man triumphs in the Malaysian rain

Fernando Alonso took a surprise victory as Ferrari put their recent troubles behind them in an action-packed Malaysian Grand Prix.

The race was stopped after just six laps after a torrential downpour and restarted under safety car conditions.

Alonso soon assumed the lead after switching to intermediate tyres, with Sergio Perez his closest challenger.

Indeed, the Sauber driver continued to claw back time on Alonso, but just when he had closed the gap to the Spaniard to less than half a second, he went wide and lost a further five seconds.

However, Perez recovered from his mistake to safely secure second place ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Mark Webber was fourth for the second successive race, with Kimi Raikkonen setting the fastest lap on the way to finishing fifth.

Bruno Senna, Paul di Resta, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nico Hulkenberg and Michael Schumacher completed the points paying positions.

Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel both collided with the HRT of Narain Kathikeyan in separate incidents, and although they were both able to rejoin the track, neither managed to make break into the top 10.
