Assists Explained – Week 32

23rd March 2017By: Tom Green

The allocation of assists is often a major talking point and this article gives managers an insight as to certain points were or were not given.

Please note that assists awarded during live updates are provided by a feed – no assists are awarded by the feed for penalties, own goals, rebounds off the woodwork, goalkeeping parries/dropped crosses etc. Also, “double assists” are never awarded by the feed. Goals are subsequently reviewed by the Fantasy League Assist Panel and amended manually after all of the day’s matches have been completed.

West Brom 2 Arsenal 1
Goal: Hal Robson-Kanu
Assist: Nacer Chadli

West Brom inflicted a fourth defeat in five games for Arsenal after a brace from Craig Dawson saw the home side win 3-1. The Baggies' lead was restored when a through-ball from Chadli was blocked by substitute goalkeeper David Ospina only as far as Robson-Kanu, who tucked away the rebound. As this was effectively a goalkeeping parry, the assist was manually awarded to Chadli after all of Saturday's games were completed

Crystal Palace 1 Watford 0
Goal: Troy Deeney o.g.
Assist: Yohan Cabaye

Crystal Palace won their third game on the trot after a 1-0 win against Watford at Selhurst Park. Palace scored the only goal of the game when Cabaye's free-kick was headed into his own net by Deeney. As the live stats feed does not allocate assists for own goals, this was also added manually on Saturday evening.

Stoke 1 Chelsea 1
Goal: Jonathan Walters
Assist: None

Chelsea moved one step closer to the Premier League title after Gary Cahill’s late strike saw off Stoke at the Bet365 Stadium. The Potters got back on level terms with the league leaders after Walters was adjudged to have been pushed by the Chelsea captain and picked himself up to score the subsequent spot-kick. As it is not possible to assist your own goal, no assist was awarded as a result.

Stoke 1 Chelsea 2
Goal: Gary Cahill
Assist: None

For Chelsea winner, an attempt on goal by David Luiz was diverted back into the path of his central defensive partner by Erik Pieters, with Cahill scoring from close range. However, as the defensive intervention was from a defender rather than a goalkeeper and was not a goal-line clearance, no assist was awarded.

West Ham 1 Leicester 3
Goal: Jamie Vardy
Assist: Wilfried Ndidi

Leicester earned their first away win of the season after holding on against West Ham at the London Stadium. In a goalmouth scramble following a corner, the ball twice inadvertently deflected off Ndidi to Vardy, who slotted home the loose ball. No matter how unintentional it may have been, the touch from Ndidi proved to be the last pass to the goalscorer and thus deserving of an assist.

Bournemouth 1 Swansea 0
Goal: Alfie Mawson o.g.
Assist: Benik Afobe

Bournemouth improved their position in the Premier League after a 2-0 win against relegation rivals Swansea moved them nine points clear of the drop zone. Bournemouth scored the opening goal of the game when an Afobe shot was deflected into his own net by Mawson, being officially credited as an own goal. As the live stats feed does not award assists for own goals, this was added manually after the game.

Middlesbrough 1 Man Utd 2
Goal: Rudy Gestede
Assist: None

Middlesbrough’s first game without manager Aitor Karanka ended in defeat after a rampant Manchester United side put three goals past them. However, relegation-threatened Boro were given some hope when Gestede pounced on a loose ball to temporarily halve the deficit. A header from Marten de Roon was diverted to Gestede by defender Chris Smalling, causing no assist to be awarded as a result.

Man City 0 Liverpool 1
Goal: James Milner
Assist: Roberto Firmino

Manchester City are now 12 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, after they were forced to settle for a draw against Liverpool. Milner scored his seventh spot-kick of the season after Firmino was deemed to have been fouled in the area by Gael Clichy. As the live stats feed does not allocate assists for penalties which are subsequently scored, this was added manually following Sunday's match.
